Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Prom Night

My second born son left for prom about 30 minutes ago. His date came to our house (women's lib! just kidding, she lives about 30 minutes away, so they decided she would drive here and then they left from here) and we were able to get some pictures, which was nice since we don't usually get to see (or meet) the girl.

It's very cloudy out, hence the lack of good lighting, but cloudy outdoors still beats photos indoors.

I don't know why this kid can't smile naturally -- what a goof!

I have nothing against this sweet girl, but I think if you have to have a wrist corsage because your dress would fall down under the wight of a pin-on corsage, you should wear a different dress. Who designs these things for goodness sake?

Dad played chauffeur, which guarantees that all parties arrive in one piece (well, almost guarantees -- St. Christopher, pray for us.)

  1. Sweet, Barb...thanks for sharing your sweet memories. And your young man looked quite dashing in his tux!

  2. RITE OF PASSAGE! AAAAGH!

Pardon me. It's just that...my oldest son is only 12...and my...emotions...see..get knotted up at the thought of prom dates.

  3. Kimberly,
He did look nice in his tux -- he's tall and slim. If only I could get him to stand up straight!

    Margaret,
I didn't shed a tear, until I set the dinner table with four plates and though, "Oh my gosh, he can't leave home."

PS I don't think so -- I look absolutely awful in that picture -- with hardly a stitch of makeup and no lipstick! For shame.

  5. Everyone looks great! I hope they had fun! And I hope you held up well, too ... Prom—I can't even begin to imagine ...

  6. Cutie patooties! I think everyone looks good (and I agree about the corsage bit 100%). Connor is 16 so I'm just . . . (sniff) . . . having a moment as well.

  7. Wow! Congratulations to your son, great pic of all of you, Makeup or not Barbara, you and your hubby are one proud set of parents standing next to this very fine young man. Good job! :)

Now reality sets in, another crosses a milestone and everything changes in the home, all good of course. Big hugs Mama.

  8. NJL,
They did have fun. He came home very happy and he said they danced all night!

    Sarah,
Though prom is a rite of passage, kids today are not quite as serious about it as I think they were "in my day." It's all kind of casual -- just for fun.

    Sarah O.,
Don't blink -- when you open your eyes, it will be your turn. ;-)

    Renee,
Yes, reality is setting in. He's a junior, and next year we'll be talking colleges and such (can I handle two in college?). Josh is the one that went for a visit to the Josephinum (under slight duress) a week ago, so his next year they'll be lots of praying (as if there isn't already!).

  9. Our prom isn't until the end of May, and we'll be sending our 3rd one off. We never get to see the kids because they always dress at someone else's house (who lives closer to school and got the limo!). So maybe it's not "real" for us! My oldest girl actually had the nerve to go without a date TWICE.

  10. Nice! Re the dress (I just took Middle Sister shopping for a graduation dress which no one will see under the graduation robe), it's hard to find one WITH straps anymore. Or one long enough. If you're over 5 feet tall, good luck with that. (My daughter is almost 5'6" so it was a tough road!) Just be happy you know how to sew for your daughter.

  11. Barbara, you DO look beautiful!

Your son looks so very handsome and dare I say grown up?

    * I agree with the dress things, we saw a good friends dress this weekend and I was shocked at how revealing it was and what's with the garters they are wearing now?
