Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

In Limbo

.

I started Faith's First Holy Communion dress over the weekend.

First I botched cutting the chiffon. Have you ever cut chiffon? It's like cutting water. I had to buy more. But then I placed it on a cotton tablecloth to keep it from moving and that went well.

Then I started on the ties, the first step. It took me and hour. I had to make those wee tiny hems all the way around the long kind of ties you make in a bow at the back of a dress. Have you ever made those kinds of wee tiny hems on chiffon? Oy vey. It took me an hour. I thought I was in waaaaay over my head.

But, then I made the bodice, sans sleeves. I finished it and I tried it on her, because I was afraid she would be swimming in it. But, even without the zipper, it looks pretty good.

It's still early, however. And I have miles of chiffon to hem. The sleeves have two layers of chiffon, as does the skirt. And underneath the chiffon is miles of crepe. Oy vey. What did I get myself into?

The veil is finished and I took pictures, but someone absconded with the camera cable, which is not a very nice thing to do. So, I'm in limbo. Can't move forward.

SO, I suppose I'll go make lesson plans.

Have a day. It's up to you what kind it is.

  1. For my older daughter, I experienced much of what you did. In the end, it turned out beautiful, but wow, what a lot of stress. For my younger daughter, I realized that the stress had taken away a lot of my joy over the event, and the cost difference was very little. I purchased a beautiful dress for her. :) It's such a beautiful event, though. I love the memories of those days.

  2. Lol-ing at your last comment! I'm sorry you're frustrated. It sounds like a very challenging dress, and I would not be up to that challenge. I'm going to post my own little challenges on that very subject later!

  3. Put it this way. You have one little girl and you are making her a one-of-a-kind First Communion dress. You are awesome! I'm so proud of you!

    Off to lesson plan... :)

  4. I stressed when I made this dress too. But then afterward, I said, OH! That was easy! I swear the instructions are written by people who think the craft of sewing should be kept mysterious and difficult. It WILL come together. It WILL look awesome.

And boy, do I wish I were there to run over and help.

  5. I agree with Michelle, the pattern instructions are near impossible to read! I stress over making something, then when I am done, I realized how easy it would have been to do, if I had followed instinct and not the directions.

I plan on making the dresses for my daughters when they reach their First Holy Communion.:)

  7. Sheila,
In hindsight...I wish I didn't have this stress, as much as I wanted to make the dress.

    Sara,
It's really the fabric and my skill level that are the issues.

    Margaret,
You wouldn't be so proud of the mutterings under my breath. I could really use a piece of that booze cake right now!

Oh, boy, so do I, Michelle. I'd having you hemming! It's really not the translation as much as my ability in question.

You're right Beth. sometimes we get all caught up in the directions instead of thinking it through. That's why I love using a pattern a second and third time -- you work out all the kinks.

    Oh, Cheryl. Thanks!

  8. Sorry, Sweetie, but all the booze bakes out.

Except...why are the children sleeping so well right now? ;)

  9. PS. And you think I don't know about your mutterings but I do.
