Today is her day, St. Martha. The sister of Mary Magdalen and Lazarus. The one who served the Lord, all the while begrudging her sister's place at the table next to Jesus. Just like a woman, to show her jealousy of another woman's choice to do things differently. But Our Lord told her, "Mary hath chosen the best part, which shall not be taken away from her."
Nevertheless, I love St. Martha. There is so much of her in us Catholic mothers, having the desire to be contemplative and prayerful, but needing to keep order in our homes. Somebody has to do it.
Today has been a decidedly un-Martha-like day. I stayed in my nightgown until lunch, reading blogs, drinking coffee, chatting with the kids. Everyday should be like that. Sadly, my house would look very un-Martha-like as well if they were.
Well, anyway, you're waiting, aren't you? I said I'd announce the winner of the necklace giveaway today, didn't I? And I shall.
But first, I'm going to tell you whose image is on the reverse of Our Lady of Czestochowa. Several of you guessed correctly. It is our beloved Pope John Paul II. Of course it is.
And Poloniae is pronounced Po-lo-nee-eye (I told you incorrectly Christina and my Latin scholar corrected me. It's always nice to have a Latin scholar around.) Ray-gee-nuh Po-lo-nee-eye.
And now for the winner:
Can't read it?
Why, it's Sara. That Georgia peach of a gal.
Email me your address, would ya, honey?
And enjoy your Martha day, friends. She's the patron of all things very womanly -- cooking and cleaning (and if you're a feminist and you think those are not your job, you better keep surfing). So kick up your feet and read a book, or better yet, pray the rosary. Be un-Martha-like today.
.
I'm such a Martha! But I will try to honor her feast day by taking your advice and being un-Martha-like today, at least in-between dentist appointments, swimming lessons and the like ...
ReplyDeleteCongrats, Sara, on winning that gorgeous necklace! Yeah!!
i am such a martha too! but i'm sure by now she'll gladly intercede for us if we ask her to help us be a little more like her sister!
ReplyDeletebeautiful necklace, barb.
congrats to sara.
have a blessed day.
ps. i seem to have martha days every day...
Oh, yes, I'm a Martha, too! And I'm sooooo thrilled to have won your gorgeous necklace that I have tears in my eyes.
ReplyDeleteThanks, sweetie!
Address to arrive forthwith.
Oh dear... I have to be Martha today. I'm cooking dinner for a family that just had their 10th child.
ReplyDeleteBut that's a good thing, right?
:)
I'm being very Martha-like today too...making a red meat gravy for pasta, doing laundry, vacuuming, and minding my little Rosebud....
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Sara! :)
Congratulations, Sara! :) You are most blessed to receive such a lovely gift.
ReplyDeleteI asked St Martha to help me be a better housewife but also to help me improve my faith to her level. After all, she was the one who made almost the same profession as St Peter, "You are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world!" I want to be like that in everything I do.
Congratulations Sara! Sort of having a grumpy day here - it's suppose to be 107ish today and my house is blazing! We don't have air conditioning but another summer like this and I'll be pinching my pennies to get it installed!
ReplyDeleteBarb...you are such a doll! I love that you spent the Feast of St. Martha in your nightgown until noon! I'm going to remember that one next year...too appropo!
ReplyDeleteCongrats, Sara! lovely necklace, you'll look beautiful in it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the pronunciation there, Ms. Barbara! And thank you to the latin scholar! ;)
Congratulations to Sara! I like Barb's "Martha Day" thing as well. Next year! (Well, maybe this year too...I was on vacation!)
