Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Unpredictable

.
That was my weekend -- almost nothing went as planned.

On Friday I mentioned that the weather men were predicting up to five inches of snow for Saturday. I don't know why we listen to those guys.

I ran around like a nut buying boots for college boy and delivering them, and getting my grocery shopping out of the way so that I could hole up at home on Saturday while the "storm" raged around me. What we ended up with was about a quarter inch of icy slush. Fortunately, it wasn't a slick sheet of icy, and didn't stick to the trees and power lines.

Unfortunately, it wasn't that beautiful, soft, quiet blanket of powdery white snow I had hoped for. I had visions of sitting curled up on the sofa with knitting in my lap enjoying Kit Kittredge with Peach. But, since we were having guests for dinner and the snow wasn't going to keep them away, I didn't sit for a second all day anyway.

Yesterday was even more unpredictable. We headed out the door for noon Mass and as soon as we got on the freeway Doug said there was something wrong with one of the rear tires on the car. Then a friendly driver next to us pointed out that indeed the tire was flat. Thanks be to God, and our Guardian Angels, that we were able to safely exit the road and get to a gas station. Doug had to wait quite a while for emergency road service, but thankfully we were close enough to home that my mom came and picked up the kids and me.

After we all got home, ate some lunch and I did some lesson planning and study guides, we headed out for 5 o'clock (last call) Mass. I am grateful that our parish has a late Sunday Mass. It's not one we normally attend, but it was reverent and beautiful and just what we needed at the end of the day. Father blessed my new scapular afterward and then we grabbed a sandwich on the way home, which was a nice treat.

So, our weekend was all mixed up and not at all what we predicted (and maybe I've mentioned that we are creatures of habit in our household and not inclined to deal with change all that well), but it was good. It is well.

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot,
Thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

One really nice thing that happened as a result of missing our "predicted" Mass. Before the final blessing at the "last call" Mass, Father said that since yesterday was the last Sunday in Christmas time and today begins Ordinary Time, all those at Mass should take home a Christmas flower from the altar. We came home and Doug put the flower in the (brand spankin' new) front window and then, for whatever reason, went outdoors to take a picture. I'm glad he did.

"It is well."

  3. we went to "last call" 5 o'clock mass last night too.it is always very reverent, quiet also and although i don't prefer to wait to go so late, my husband likes it, so we go about twice a month and i must say, that IS what i enjoy- the kind of a prayerful, peaceful way the day comes to an end. and yesterday, btw. was sunny, hot and windy here!
and what a pretty picture. i can imagine someone saying "it's nine o'clock and all is well...."
we are so not creatures of habit. it seems like there is constant craziness going around in our world so i have learned to roll with the punches. sometimes i think to myself, Lord, if this is the way You treat Your friends, it's no wonder You have so few! (quoting st. therese??)
    anyway, have a blessed week.
we've been enjoying kitt kittredge too. and tales from avonlea.
    have a blessed week barb.

  5. We were hoping to get some of that snow and didn't. I, too, was looking forward to being *homebound* for the weekend, snuggling up with a good book.

Sounds like you had a wonderful weekend. Love the photo!
