.I've been trying to think of some good family movies to reserve at the library for my first week of recovery. I think we have Disney movies covered, but I'm hoping to get some suggestions for a few off-the-beaten-path style flicks. Any suggestions?

ReplyDeleteWho doesn't love a good musical? Oldies are pretty safe as far as content goes. The kids really enjoy the humor in some of them. John Wayne? I think all kids should have a working knowledge of John Wayne's best films; he's an American icon, after all. :-) Have you seen Nanny McPhee? I saw one recently that I thought was really good, but I can't remember what it is. :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks love2learn mom -- I'll check it out.
ReplyDeleteJennie,
I guess I'm kind of dry on titles, but I'll see what the library has in musicals. Peach and I recently enjoyed My Fair Lady -- I could watch that again. As for John Wayne, I'm afraid I'm very un-American because I can't stand John Wayne movies. In fact, it was a bit of a joke in my family growing up -- if you didn't want me to watch, just pick a John Wayne! Thanks for the suggestions -- I'll try to get Nanny McPhee.
My kids loved Wallace and Gromit's The Curse of the Wererabbit. We rented it from Netflix.
ReplyDelete:)
We just watched Cheaper By the Dozen (the original version) and it was wonderful! The whole family could watch it and the story is true, which makes it even more lovely.
ReplyDeleteGod Bless,
Jane
There's a Disney version of Tuck Everlasting from a few years ago that was really well done. Disney usually butchers a story, but the only significant departure from the book was the age of the girl.
ReplyDeleteOne of our favorite movies is "In Search of the Castaways". It is an oldie, Haley Mills is a pre-teen. Oh, but it is filled with adventure and traveling and geography and music. Dd9 and ds6 love this movie.
ReplyDeleteThere is a great old comedy series called "Bless me Father". I have gotten these from the library before. They are fun for the whole family.
ReplyDeleteA Boy Named Charlie Brown, Come Home, Snoopy, Wallace and Grommit (three shorts), Wallace and Grommit: The Curse of the Wererabbit, any Pixar movie, Bernadette, The Passion of Bernadette, A Time for Miracles (on St. Elizabeth Ann Seton), Saint Rita (I was surprised how much I liked that one), Muppets Take Manhatten, The Great Muppet Caper, The Muppet Movie, Song of Bernadette, Wide Awake, The Last Sineater, Finding Neverland, Nanny McPhee, The Gospel of John, Summer Magic, Pollyanna, The Horse in the Gray Flannel Suit, Meet the Robinsons, Little Women, Miss Potter (not interesting for the younger ones but I loved this one), Finian's Rainbow, 1776 (timely appropriate), Angels in the Outfield, The Brave Little Toaster, The Bells of St. Marys, Flight of the Navigator, Jonah: A Veggietales Movie, A Man for All Seasons, Matilda, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Mary Poppins, The Music Man, October Sky, The Secret of NIHM, The Land Before Time, Seven brides for Seven Brothers, Singin' in the Rain, The Sound of Music, To Kill a Mockingbird.
ReplyDeleteI hope your library has at least a few of those. Sorry my list got so long...good thing I am short on time. lol. Maybe some will lead to other ideas.
Yes, original Cheaper By the Dozen is a blast.
ReplyDeleteSo is The Trouble with Angels!
We all enjoyed The Iron Giant and Robots (supposed to be kids' movies but they had good appeal).
Evan Almighty was very good, but I would not recommend Bruce Almighty.
Thanks so much, ladies. These titles should keep us happy for quite a while. The library had quite a few. I'll check to see if Hulu has some of the oldies.
ReplyDeleteA couple of my favorite movies that I have borrowed from our library are Elizabeth Gaskell's: Wives & Daughters and North & South. They are both great!
ReplyDeleteLots of great titles suggested. I also recommend Miss Potter, Yours, Mine and Ours (the old version with Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda) is great! The Little Princess and Secret Garden are movies my kids have loved! The Scarlet and the Black and The Fairy Tale (a true story) are also quite good.
ReplyDeleteWe watched "Everyone's Hero" a few weeks ago at our local theater that has free movie mornings three times a week. I had never heard of it but since it was rated "G" I decided to take my children to it. I loved it. It had a nice message. I'd like to someday add it to our home movie collection. At the end of the movie I learned that it was directed by Dana and Christopher Reeve. Hope you get the chance to see it.
ReplyDeleteJust came across your blog today and learned of your surgery. You and your family will be in my prayers!
