Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Need Some Suggestions Here

I want to pick up a few books for my cousin, Jill. I know that I will buy The Kitchen Madonna, since Matilda turned me on to it (how did I miss that one during my formative years?) even though I'll have to get a used copy (one for me, one for Jill).

But, I stood, looking at my bookshelves this morning and just could not find one other title I would buy. I want her to have a few good books to pick up during her convalescence and chemo. Not too heavy, not too light. So, I'm asking for title suggestions.

Jill is 25 years old. She just finished earning her Masters in special ed, and started her very first teaching job. She enjoys children's literature (hence The Kitchen Madonna), but other than that I don't really know what she reads. I think all bets are off anyway on what you "normally" read while going through a trying illness.

If you have any suggestions, I'd certainly appreciate them.

PS As of yesterday she was back in the surgical ICU. She has some "pockets" of infection in her abdomen and is on heavy antibiotics. They are praying for these infections to clear up, because she can't start chemo until they do.

Thank you, again, for your prayers.

  1. Rumer Godden is great! She has another book "The Diddakoi" which, if you can find it, is just as wonderful as "The Kitchen Madonna."

"A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" is a fabulous book and a huge favorite of mine.

Jill Kenner's books "Carpe Demon" and others are silly, fun, chick lit--"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" grows up to be a Catholic soccer mom.

Prayers are coming for Jill. Hope she heals soon so she can start chemo.

  2. To make me laugh, I always pick up something by Erma Bombeck, who incidentally wrote about children struggling with cancer as she struggled silently with her own. Her faith and her humor are second to none!

  3. Barbara, I'll keep praying for Jill.

For history, Jeff Shaara is topnotch.
