The Star Spangled Banner
Being a homeschooling mother, every once in a great while I get a feeling of panic that I have forgotten to teach something. We all get those little attacks -- momentary thumping of the heart and a sick stomach. I'm not worried about the big stuff. I use a great curriculum and I am certain that there are no major gaps in my children's education. Just little gaps -- like the Star Spangled Banner. Do they even teach that in school? I have no idea. But, since I am the only educator of my young children, I can't blame someone else.
So yesterday, after having one of those little attacks where I imagined my children standing at a ball game unable to join in the singing of our National Anthem, I went on an all-out Star Spangled Banner spree. Thank goodness for the Internet. We found this great site, which not only teaches the history of the song, but also plays the melody so that ol' mom only had to sing the words. It also offers the modern score, for those of you who are musically inclined. This site is great also for learning about our American flag and this one for learning about all related subjects.
