Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Silver Lining

.
Two good things about Ash Wednesday, other than the opportunity to wear my mortality on my forehead all day:

Dinner clean up is a breeze.

Extra sleep the night after. Am I the only one who has to go to bed early to avoid feeling serious tummy growls?

And, speaking of Ash Wednesday fasting, I found an interesting article at Catholic Culture on whether or not one should fast from certain beverages. I had some questions on this topic myself yesterday as I gave into the temptation to drink a Coke to fight off both an afternoon low blood sugar headache and the need for caffeine.

  1. I just drank water, because non-water beverages have calories and whatnot that make you feel less hungry. So I'd say that other beverages are included in the fast. Or that's what I'd say if anybody asked. Which nobody did. :-)

  2. I'm glad coffee doesn't count. Anyway I drink it black now - which is not as enjoyable as when I put sugar and creamer in it regularly. I went to black last summer? Anyway, I kept off ten pounds - time to get rid of excess candy/chocolate consumption. All in good time.

  3. Well, according to the article, Jennie, any beverages that are not food (like soup broth would be food -- I would definitely say a milkshake would be food) are not included in the fast. In other words, I'm o.k. with the Coke, but in hindsight, water probably would have relieved the headache better, if not the low blood sugar symptoms.

  4. I agree with the low blood sugar afternoon zap. I went through that too. It's that dern devil, cause if it's not a day of "fasting" well I can go just about all day and not eat a thing. Say "fast" and all of a sudden my stomach acts as if I haven't eaten in a week. Ugh.

You've been tagged for the name meme!

  5. Barbara, I can so relate to the sugar low. I normally drink very little caffeine and prefer none at all but I completely lost count of how many coffees I had yesterday, big duh for me, so not good in the end. The growlies did take over but maybe the caffeine helped ward them away until bed. :-) Thanks for your very kind message today. Made my day! Hugs!!!

  6. Dawn,
Isn't that amazing how as soon as you deny yourself, it's all you want? You're right about that dern devil.

    Renee,
You are welcome -- you are an awesome woman!

  7. Oh, the low-blood-sugar thing was bad around here yesterday. So bad, in fact, that I fell asleep on the couch. I think I'm going to have to be a little more prudent about what I DO choose to eat and drink on fast days, so I can still function.

  8. I thought of you when I read this post, dear Barbara. Sending it your way for consideration.

PS. I had a cup of coffee in between my [very] big lunch and my meager supper of 1 McDonald's fish sandwich.

PPS. Is it just me, or did they used to put shredded lettuce on those fishwiches? Is McDonald's going all cheap on us?

    Don't answer that.

  9. Margaret,
I don't think I ever fasted when I was pregnant. I have low blood sugar issues normally -- I probably would have passed out during pregnancy. Take care of yourself, darlin'. I worry about you, ya know.

I think Wendy's puts lettuce on their fish. McDonald's never has in my memory.
