Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Snow day

Today Columbus schools, and most of the suburbs, called a snow day. There are about 2 inches, maybe three, of snow on the ground (I know you Minnesotans are laughing!). I think this has happened several years in a row now where the kids just get back from Christmas break and it snows and the schools call a snow day. We live in Ohio. Do people not buy snow boots, hats and gloves for children anymore? And the Columbus city school system apparently has no mechanism for calling a delay because they never have as long as we've had a kid in high school (this is our 11th consecutive year at the all-boys Catholic high school -- and the Catholic schools close when the city schools close because of the busing). It's so frustrating for me because the starting and stopping is worse than a break. I don't have to let Faith have a day off, but, honestly I feel like the meanest mom in the world making her do school when her brother is home and all her friends are playing in the snow. Maybe I'll call it a field trip since she's running around the great outdoors as I write this. {wink}

We got our white, Jenny!

I couldn't go back to sleep this morning after we found out a snow day had been called, so I started the sleeve on Faith's sweater and watched a documentary about adoption, and how children form bonds with parents and how biological children react to adopted children. It is called The Dark Matter of Love. I found it fascinating.

I also found fascinating a new trick I learned the other day in working on the purple sweater (it has taken me so long to knit this sweater it will be a long time before I can knit with purple yarn again!). I learned an attached i-cord, which is sort of a rolled edge on a knitted garment, and let me tell you, it takes old dogs a long time to learn knew tricks. I tried this technique over and over again. I couldn't understand the written directions, so I Googled it. I watched video after video and tried and tried and just couldn't figure it out. It's really not that complicated but none of the directions said how many needles you should be using, so I was trying with two -- normal knitting, right? I finally remembered my old friend knittinghelp.com and got it immediately (and I needed two dpns plus the needle the yarn was being held on). Isn't it funny how you can see something or hear something over and over and not understand and then someone says it another way or shows you another way and it clicks? I've seen it so often in homeschooling, but rarely with my own brain. Anyway, it's really fun to knit an attached i-cord, so now I'll be adding one to all my sweaters. Ha!

  1. Sunny and warm where we are right now, the boys are playing golf. Back to reality this weekend. I am not ready to go back to school and cold. Happy snow day!

    1. You know me, I'm happy all snug and warm in my house, but it is REALLY cold today. I'm surprised they didn't call another inclement weather day. Enjoy your last few days!

  2. Oh, I am so glad you got your snow to cover up all that dreary brown!

    I remember doing an attached i-chord once. I really liked the look. I just sewed the buttons on the sweater I made for Therese tonight. I had fun shopping for those buttons in the German fabric store, especially since she spoke English!

  3. Your knitting is gorgeous..I could never do it! We have one tomorrow! SNOW DAY! Which is why I'm staying up late, reading blogs. =) Apparently it will be much too cold tomorrow or something. I don't care! It means no running around for me because I no longer homeschool the oldest and I miss the days where I could stay home all day. Your photos are beautiful. We still don't have a ton of snow here, I wish for a bit more and a bit warmer temps so we could at least go sledding. Blessings, Barbara!

    1. Certainly you could do it -- it's a pattern and you're a smart woman (although "make an attached i-cord" in the pattern was really pretty lacking in much help)!

  4. BEAUTIFUL work!!!

    Snow days. We have "ice days" down here. They have no snow or ice removal equipment. So when something wicked this way comes, they cancel school. I still make mine school though...just with a few extra recess sessions packed in.

    Wishing you a fantastic second semester!

    1. I understand ice days in TX, but snow days in Ohio for 3 inches? Ridiculous. Today it is even colder (presently 11 degrees) and I thought they'd call an inclement weather day because it is so cold for the kids to stand at the bus stops (and often the buses don't start). And I would make Faith school if her brother wasn't home. This is his last year of high school, so next year, she's at the table no matter what!

  5. I need to learn the attached icord! I've been anxious to try it, but haven't really had the right project. Soon.

    I finally learned, after too many times of being the Mean Mom, to let the kids out on snow days. They could play in the morning and do school in the afternoon, because, by then, the snow is gone. We wasted several precious, GA snows making the kids work first, only to find out the snow didn't last past lunchtime!
