Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

It seems the dog days of summer have truly arrived. I don't think the temps in central Ohio have dipped below 90 in weeks. Bright hot sun, 75% humidity, not a cloud to shade the land. Does it sound like I'm complaining? Well, I shan't complain, but I will say I would trade every 90 degree day for a 5 degree day anytime. Honestly, I don't complain about the cold. At least I won't. I promise.

I went to bed last night with a headache and I woke up with it this morning. It feels like I'm having a stroke because it's only on the left side of my head (except I don't really think you get a headache when you have a stroke). It goes with the stiff neck I've had on the left side for a couple days. I think it requires a day on the sofa, not moving my head. I have two movies from Netflix to keep me entertained, and four Seven Sorrows chaplets to make to keep me busy. If I could just keep those pesky kids from bothering me. And the laundry. And meals. Maybe I'll have the pesky kids do the laundry and make the meals. There's an idea.

I saw this picture at Christine's blog the other day and it just broke my heart. Don't you just hate it when that happens? It's just a nasty reminder that we can try but we just can't protect them from everything. I have a recipe for a safe bug repellent and I wanted to share. It's lemon eucalyptus which has been shown to repel bugs better than Deet, and it's perfectly natural.

You need a concentration of lemon eucalyptus oil (available at natural food stores) that is 5 to 10% essential oil (lemon eucalyptus) so you want to use 1 part oil to 10-20 parts carrier. I used Witch Hazel as my carrier because I don't like to feel oily, but you can use olive oil if you don't mind the oily feel or vodka instead of witch hazel if you don't like feeling oily.  For a small batch, I used 1/2 cup witch hazel to 50 drops of lemon eucalyptus oil. I put it in a little bottle that will fit in my purse if I need to take it somewhere. So far it works great and Doug and the boys used it on a golf course notorious for biting mosquitoes -- at dusk.

Yesterday was one of those days that tests you. I failed. I had too many places to go and not enough time.  I was having my brother, his family, and my mother over for dinner and I ran short on time to make dinner. I was not a happy camper. When my company arrived I warned them to stay out of the kitchen because it was just the kind of day where I needed some space. They gladly obliged and sat at the kitchen table while I poured them wine, but, gee, they must have thought I was a real peach. Luckily they were family, and luckily dinner was decent (Paula Deen's Baked Spaghetti -- it always turns out great, and good roasted vegetables), and even dessert, which I didn't really have enough time to make, but managed. I wish I was the kind of person who could manage stress well, but I can't. I buckle. As my mother always says, "Don't wish your life away." I guess I'll just accept that juggling isn't my strong suit, and I should plan better.

I'm headed to the sofa, my friends, if you need me. Have a great Thursday.

  2. Ha! I know you and you will not be on that sofa for long.

Today's a new day, friend. That's why we have bad ones...to make the morrow all the brighter.

  3. PS. I would be remiss to not thank you for the bug dope recipe (my husband's term, not mine) and also, what'd you make for dessert? How could you even THINK to not tell us?

  4. we'll have to try that recipe, I hate the smell of that Off stuff and I'm always afraid to use it on the littles.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

  5. Thanks, Barb.I'm hoping for just a few minutes of rest, but that may be asking too much!

    Margaret,
Well, ya got me there because it's been almost an hour and I haven't sat down yet. The recipe was this Frozen Key Lime Pie. I am really not a big Key Lime fan but this pie was awesome. I used Rose's Lime Juice instead of key lime juice.

It's good stuff, Jamie, and it smells nice.

  6. Take it easy! Give yourself a day off; you deserve it.

For bugs, I use olive oil with Citronella essential oil. I just slathered it on at camp instead of body lotion and I was basically bug free, too. I'll have to try the lemon eucalyptus.

  7. Now since you made the pie, the sofa and movies should help. Hope you feel better!

Thanks for the bug stuff recipe. My husband is very leery of using anything but DEET (he works with mosquitos), but I am going to try this. I really hate to use DEET, even in small amounts, especially on the kids. (But, I'm also not too excited about West Nile virus!)

  8. I am fortunate that bugs don't like me. My blood disappoints them if any break the skin. I'm not kidding! But, I'm glad of it.

When I think I'm out of time and I'm feeling put out, I act like a jerk - then I feel bad after so long it seems like I've wasted more time. It's a vicious circle. We're human and we'll do these things; we must then, forgive and forget it. You did, after all, feed everyone some pretty yummy sounding food (and wine!!!)

  9. If this recipe is safe for my little sweet bug...I will try it. Add Vodka and I might drink it!!!!! hee hee

Thanks for the idea. Next time I will bring a net also to put over her.

Thinking of you on the couch. I also imagine you were a super duper host. Way way way better cook then me. I have a toddler right now and shopping is really hard.

  10. Is there something in the (horrible, humid) air? I believe we live in the same metro area and I have had the same thing the past few days. Even the same side of the head. Not quite as bad today, though. Hope you're feeling better.

  11. Sara,
I like the witch hazel because it's light and sometimes the oil makes me itchy!

  12. Mary,
The CDC lists Lemon Eucalyptus as one of the products that "provide reasonably long-lasting protection." It's a biopesticide and you can read about it here: http://www.epa.gov/pesticides/health/mosquitoes/ai_insectrp.htm
Much better than Deet in my book. Smells good too.

  13. Sarah,
Thanks for your "true confessions." Glad to know I'm not alone. I hate to admit this but one of the reasons I was in such a snit was because of doing things for other people, I missed Adoration. :-(
I should have put HIM first, but I didn't need to be pissy about it.

  14. Christine,
It is absolutely safe for your dolly, I would not have posted it were it not. I use it on my own Peach.

I don't have a toddler but I have a college kid I was shopping for and delivering, hence the long extended time at it. Ugh.

  15. Lorna,
Are you in Columbus? There is definitely something but I don't think it's just us. Dog days, I tell ya. Too much hot, and extended sun. We need a nice gray, rainy day. whatdya say?

  16. Yes, I am in the Columbus area. I would love a cool, gray, rainy day!

  17. My friend in the Cincinnati area has been suffering those nasty headaches, too! Hope we get a cool-down soon. I'll pray for all you headachy ladies. Thank you for the bug repellant recipe. I want to make it for the weekend: I'll be outside a lot, and the bugs think I'm the best thing on the menu! :) Rosemary (BTW - My word verification was "avian")

  18. My dear friend, find a great new book to read and take a mama-day soon. I too didn't enjoy life with a migraine yesterday, all day, what a day! I agree with the heat wave, wow, what a time of it with 90-110F here for weeks. Today, the sky has opened up and monsoon rains are here. I wanna go out and dance in puddles! Thinking and praying for you. <3
