Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Seven Quick Takes Friday

~1~

There's Cinnamon Toast in the oven. We woke up to a very cold house this morning with a brisk 39 degrees outdoors. The pilot light on the furnace was out from the summer, and since Doug was all dressed and ready to go, in suit and tie, I didn't want him to mess with it. So I bundled up in robe and blankets and started the oven for Cinnamon Toast. It smells like winter. Yum.

Trick-or-Treat was fun last night. The big kids didn't go very far (I don't have issues with big kids Trick-or-Treating as long as they wear costumes) and ended up spending most of the evening on the porch with my mom and I. They are goofy and I would rather they had been out walking off some energy, but it was what it was.

One would think she is my only child, wouldn't one? This is why the youngest child gets the reputation for being spoiled.

This was the first year no one needed help carving -- they did it all by themselves.

Josh's girlfriend was over for Trick-or-Treat and when we are together I notice that sometimes she wears a look on her face that makes me think she doesn't "get" boys. She has one sister and I don't think she's had many boyfriends. She may be in culture shock. I often feel the need to explain my sons to her, but I don't think boys can really be explained. You either get them or you don't. Fortunately I grew up with three brothers and I get them. It doesn't help that Noah has a terrible crush on her as well, so she has two boys showing off for her instead of just one. sigh.

Speaking of Trick-or-Treat I think I figured out why our city, and many others, moved it up to Thursday instead of on Halloween, Sunday. By moving it to Thursday, they (as in retailers) get a whole extra weekend for Christmas shopping. We all know that the starting bell for Christmas shopping has moved from Thanksgiving to Halloween, so I suspect retailers have pressured local governments to give them as many shopping days as possible. I could be wrong, but I don't think so. I haven't come up with another logical explanation. Have you?

With Trick-or-Treat behind us now, I have started to look toward a party Doug and I are going to throw in a few weeks to celebrate our 25th anniversary and his 50th birthday. Both events fall in the same week, so we're planning a bash. I haven't even sent out invitations, so I feel like I'm really behind -- gotta get that done this weekend.

~6~

I would like to ask your help in planning the menu. I put up a poll on the sidebar of my food blog and you can vote for the menu you think would be most fun and easy to serve a crowd. (What would you like to eat? Of course you're invited!) We're on a budget, so there are no Crab-Stuffed Lobster Tails or Tartar of Kobe Beef with Beluga Caviar on there, sad to say.

~7~

Yesterday I popped over to Elizabeth's blog and saw this very cool YouTube video. Though I generally avoid YouTube like the plague, I am grateful for the opportunity to be exposed to videos like this. They have quite a few that you can watch at YouTube (type in Seeds family in the YouTube search bar), but if you let the kids watch just make sure you keep the comments out of view (you just never know what you might read). That song is stuck in my head and that, for once, is a good thing.

Do not be anxious...and have a glorious weekend. Praise God.

  1. We don't really "do" trick-or-treating, so I don't know if it was moved up here or not. I think I would have heard, and no one came to our door. We usually go to an All Saints party instead ... But I did notice in Target, in the Halloween signage around the store, they called it "Happy Hallow-weekend" or something like that. I'm not sure why. Maybe because different communities are doing different things. Your Christmas-shopping theory is a good one, though. I hadn't thought of that, but it's really possible.

Anyway, I think it's nice that your older sons enjoy hanging out on the porch with their mom and grandma. It is a good thing. I hope my children want to hang out with me when they are teens =)

Have a wonderful weekend. It's COLD here this morning, too. Had to scrape the van windows because we can't quite park in the garage yet. Hopefully after tomorrow!

  2. Moving Halloween to Thursday? - I say it is brilliant!! (or mabye Friday would be better - but I admit Halloween just seems to fit on a Thursday) In any case, I think Halloween on a Sunday night is just silly - the kids will be up too late, eat too much candy, etc. and then have a horrible Monday. But with that said, I don't really care much for Halloween - the whole concept is kinda silly in my opinion - the point is the focus on All Saints and All Souls! Our society has totally missed those and skipped to what feels good for us - acting silly (dressing up) and eating junk! But I'm off the soap box now. I compromise with myself by sending the kids to grandmas for the holiday (if she wants to take them out she provides the costumes and cleans up the mess afterward). And instead of handing out candy, I opt for other forms of pre-packaged snacks (like handy-snacks, cheese and crackers, etc). They are not all that better, but it is a matter of principle, you know.

I enjoyed the you tube video - very catchy song.

    Thanks for the post :)

  3. I'm a stickler for tradition: Halloween in always on October 31st. My door will be open that evening from 6-9. After that, lights out.
I don't like your retail theory at all! If it's even remotely true, I may give up on all secular bits of Christmas - make it or bake it, nothing else. I'm already sick of always doing the buying and mailing gifts . . . I don't need to be pushed any further.
As always, I love your pictures.

  4. Cats seem popular this year. There were quite a number of them at the kids' costume paino recital at the nursing home, including my Katie.

Our town did trick or treating last night (Sat). I think they think it's desecrating the Lord's Day to do it on Sunday.

Still using the A/C most days to keep the house under 80 degrees, sometimes it's only for a few hours in the afternoons. But last week our highs were in the upper 80s and our lows in the upper 60s. I do see some cooler temps predicted for a week from now, but we'll see. All summer long was unbearable, so I'm finally enjoying being outside.

    Loved the video.

I've had your blog post up for nearly 24 hours and I finally have the chance to comment! Happy Sunday.

  5. I think the move to Thursday probably had more to do with football. Once you decide to move it from Sunday, you have college ball on Saturday and high school ball on Friday night.

  6. No one moved Halloween here. Trick or treat is today and I'm looking forward to opening the door to the kids in costume :)
