Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Seven Quick Takes

~1~

Thank you so very much for your support in my time of need yesterday. Your comments and emails put me in a much better place. And your prayers -- well, don't you know? Prayer changes things!

My son came home from school yesterday and told me that his girl decided it wasn't such a bother after all to drive over and go with the family to the game. Apparently thinking about it all night and all day (because we never resolved the issue last night), she changed her mind. Yes, prayer changes things. Joshua, his girl, and his best friend, are all going together to the game with my husband and Noah.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart,
and do not rely on your own insight.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.
Proverbs 3:5-6

Today, the younger two and I are headed to the apple orchard. I love going to the orchard every year. No apple tastes better than when you are standing next to the tree on which it grew. I must say I always have the image in my head of the apple tree reaching out and grabbing Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. It's just a little unsettling when you're plucking an apple from the tree.

Do you celebrate Oktoberfest? This is the last weekend of Oktoberfest 2010 and we are celebrating! Bratwurst, and kartoffelsalat, sauerkraut, apfelmus, cream puffs. Yum. Bottled root beer for the kids and some real beer for the grown ups -- it's good fun (even if you're not German!)

I purchased the book Craft Hope, in hope (no pun intended) that I would find a few crafts for Christmas gifts. I can't say I did, as most of them are crafts for young children, but it's a really great book if you are a crafter. It certainly made me want to use my God-given gifts to help someone in need. For each craft, the author gives a list of charities in need of that particular item, which is very helpful. I went to bed last night with dreams of handmade dolls, baby quilts, pilllowcase dresses, and chemo hats.

And speaking of Christmas gifts, when do you start shopping? Have you already started? I have one gift for Faith -- a sewing basket filled with notions (love it!), and a few niece gifts, but other than that, I don't have anything. It's time to get started thinking about it, and that's the worst part!

I'm planning a rosary giveaway, but I can't decide if I want to give away a five decade rosary or a car rosary. I've never done a car rosary for a giveaway, so I might make one for October -- Our Lady of the Rosary month. Leave a comment if you have a preference.

You know whose feast day is today, right? Everyone's favorite...St. Therese of the Child Jesus, the Little Flower. For today, just slow down and and examine all the little ways that you can love God ~~ nothing big, just lots of little ways.

Happy October, and have a great weekend!

For More Quick Takes go to Conversion Diary. I just saw that Jenn is blogging about Christmas. What is is about the onset of October that makes us think Christmas? ;-)

  1. Is it the coming of the cooler weather that makes us think of Christmas? Or is it just the sections of the stores filling up with Christmas already? The holiday season that starts with Halloween...er...All Saints...comes fast and furious!

  2. I try to have my Christmas shopping done by the beginning of Advent. Of course, I'm never quite done, but I'm usually close. (I need to work on wrapping early, too.) This year, I'd like to be done a little earlier because of the baby. It would be nice to enjoy Advent, with all the anticipation and hope it brings, without having to rush around being so huge ~ LOL!!

Hope the apple orchard was fun. Our apple crop was ruined this year by hail and heat, so it doesn't look like we will get to go pickin' this fall. So sad.

  3. My husband has ten days left in his final master's class, so we're holding off our Oktoberfest until the 16th. Most people don't know it ends this weekend, so we figured we'd have few complaints...besides, beer and brats are great for any time.

  4. Sara,
You're probably right, the cool weather turns our thoughts toward winter and Christmas. Maybe also the turn of the calendar -- one month closer. All Saints Day will be here in no time...I can't believe how fast September flew.

    Sarah,
I hope you get all your shopping finished so you can relax in Advent -- sit back and enjoy those last weeks.

Michelle -- You are so right, beer and brats are good any time!

  5. I'm intrigued by a car rosary... is it different than a regular one?

Haven't even thought about Christmas... eek!

Your story about your son's girlfriend cracked me up. I cant imagine the stress when he's out of your sight. Do you think it will be even worse when it's Faith's turn? Paul already has plans on getting a shotgun when our girls get to that age! :D

  6. Deborah,
A car rosary is a one-decade rosary with a clasp between the fifth and sixth beads to you can affix it to the car mirror. It's handy if you like to have one "on the go."

Until recently Faith was sure she was going to be a nun. She recently declared she was going to get married, to which I answered, "Um, it's a little early to decide that, don't you think?" I think we're going to establish the age 18 limit on dating!

I appreciate your comments -- sometimes I feel like I'm talking to myself!
