Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Dolor

This morning my young son asked if he could watch the inauguration on television. While I wanted to pretend that this day would never come, I could not, in good conscience, deny my young son, and student of sixth grade history, the opportunity to watch a historic event in our country. The history of this event has nothing to do with the individual characters involved, but the democratic process and the process of passing the power of the Office of President of the United States peacefully from one man to another.

As I stood and watched, unable to not watch, our next president swear his oath, all I could do was shake my head.

If you know me, either from reading this blog or in person, you know that my dread of seeing this day come has nothing to do with the color or culture or education of the man taking the oath, or even with his political affiliations. I don’t know him. But I know what he stands for, and I know what he has said that he plans to do. And for that I wish I had not seen this day come. This man needs our prayers, for he will stand before God one day and will be made accountable for what he has done.

I thank President George W. Bush for all that he has done for the Life movement in this country during his administration. He too will stand before God and be made accountable. Those whose lives he has saved by his toil for the sanctity of life will stand in testimony of his success. I hope, with all my heart, that the hard work and progress he has made to protect the unborn in America, will not be undone under the next administration. For that I pray.

O Almighty God, Creator of Heaven and earth and all things, You create today millions of human beings who are never permitted to see the light of day because of the sin of abortion. Grant to mankind the wisdom to respect human life at every stage of development.

You infuse souls into innocent babies even while still in their mothers' wombs, their temporary homes. Grant that no one deprives your most innocent ones the privilege of your holy Baptism whereby they may be born again to Your supernatural life by grace. One soul in Your eyes, Almighty God, is of more value than the whole created universe.

Almighty God, give man the courage and the power to remove the scourge of abortion from the face of the earth forever. Amen.

  1. Bless your heart, Barb...

Like you, we agonized over the decision regarding the Inauguration. We didn't watch. We discussed. My 15 yr. old has been so disturbed by the current "tide," he cringes when anyone mentions the name "Obama." I've actually had to chide him just a bit, telling him that he must call this man President. We honor the office, not necessarily he who sits in it, and must use it as a reminder to ourselves and to him of what that title means. It reminds me of a very liberal priest I knew who wanted us to simply call him by his name, not "Father." I would never comply...I needed the reminder of the dignity of his Holy Orders and so did he.

I do hope we're not sorry later that we didn't watch such an historic moment. For better or worse, he is our President and will be in our prayers. We want to see our government succeed, we don't want to wash our hands, but prayerfully hope that like most politicians, he keeps none of his promises.

May God use him as a means of grace for us all. I just wish this didn't feel like a slow motion train wreck...

  2. Oh, I feel the same way. I think this is a great historical event for the fact that he is the first black president, but I feel, "why him?" Why not some other pro-life black president?

We only watched for barely 3 minutes, so the kiddos could at least see what he looks like. But he's bad, right mom? Yes, but now you know what he looks like.

Do you have a list or know where I could find a list of the good things President Bush did do for the pro-life movement? My dh is kind of disgusted that more was not done and even more disgusted at who is the new president. Pretty hopeless.

  4. I watched with my younger two knowing my eldest had to watch it in his high school classes today . . .we could commiserate together later (and we did). But, I did remind him that he's in the office of the Prez and we must respect that and never forget to pray hard for that man. Being a military spouse, it's even more important for me to pray for him.

  5. Those who teach will be judged more severely, and I believe that those who know the truth will be judged even more severely than them.

I am afraid that many Catholics who did not vote for life in this election will be surprised at what they find one day.

The road to hell is paved...

    Pray. Pray. Pray.

  6. Thanks for sharing you thoughts and the prayer. I wanted to blog about the inauguration but I couldn't bring myself to do it, at least not yet.

When are we going to get some warmer weather around here, anyway? Where's the global warming???
