Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
Phil 4:6-7

Weekly Liturgical Activities

.

This weekend, Saturday, is the feast of my favorite saint, Francis of Assisi. Peach's middle name is Frances, after him, and I plan to celebrate all day, with food, and song, and prayer. Tuesday brings us the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Because of my devotion to the Blessed Mother, I started my own rosary ministry, and will enjoy this feast day as well. Check back here on Tuesday and leave a comment to win one of my rosaries.

Saturday, October 4, 2008 -- Feast of St. Francis of Assisi

Biography for children here.

The story of St. Francis by Paul Gallico.

Short stories about St. Francis and the animals.

You can download a coloring page here or here.

Our favorite book about St. Francis is The Good Man of Assisi, but there are many good picture books about St. Francis -- check your library.

You can play this online memory game, (Who is Who 2 under easy Games) including the image of St. Francis.

Learn the Prayer of St. Francis, or sing it (words here and melody here).

Prepare a nice Italian dinner -- maybe Chicken Parmesan or some Baked Ziti -- here are some recipes. Make some Italian biscotti or pizzelles or make some gelato (many recipes found here)

"The Divine Praises"

Francis of Assisi
You are holy, Lord, the only God,
and Your deeds are wonderful.
You are strong.
You are great.
You are the Most High.
You are Almighty.
You, Holy Father are King of heaven and earth.
You are Three and One, Lord God, all Good.
You are Good, all Good, supreme Good,
Lord God, living and true.
You are love. You are wisdom.
You are humility. You are endurance.
You are rest. You are peace.
You are joy and gladness.
You are justice and moderation.
You are all our riches, and You suffice for us.
You are beauty.
You are gentleness.
You are our protector.
You are our guardian and defender.
You are our courage. You are our haven and our hope.
You are our faith, our great consolation.
You are our eternal life, Great and Wonderful Lord,
God Almighty, Merciful Saviour.

This Sunday's Gospel is
the Parable of the Tenants. It's also Respect Life Sunday.

For Sunday's Gospel, you can download activities here, but I think the coloring page is kind of scary.

There are also some activities here (same coloring page, though).

Download a different coloring page here.

Download catholicmom.com's Mass worksheet for young children here, and for older children here.

While I am unable to find any resources for children regarding Respect Life Sunday, it is important to talk to children, when they are old enough to understand, about abortion and the evil it represents. The only hope for a pro-life future in our country is for our children to grow up never questioning that abortion is a sin against God, and for them to learn respect for life from conception to natural death.

Tuesday, October 7, 2008 -- Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary

About this feast day.

You will find many activities for a Blessed Mother Feast Day here.

Here is a website dedicated to our Lady of the Rosary.

And this beautiful website is dedicated to all things related to our Blessed Mother. Be sure to check out Children's Resources -- link at the bottom.

Find a coloring page at Charlotte's place (don't you love them?).

Cut some fresh flowers for your Mary altar today.

And be sure to pray the rosary with the children, even if it's one decade. Try a scriptural rosary -- I think it helps the children remember what praying the rosary is about.

Bake a ship-shaped cake (check out Charlotte's), since the origin of this feast came from the Christian fleet defeating the Turks at the Battle of Lepanto in 1570 through the intercession of Mary through the rosary.

  2. Thank you for this awesome collection of ideas, Barbara! Now, I won't be baking Italian for my family but I *will* be going to The Olive Garden with my friends.

    That counts, right? :)

    Happy Feast of St. Francis!
