I have this dainty little plant growing in my yard and it seems to love my Blessed Mother statue. It grows around her feet, amid the English Ivy that has taken over our front beds. I suspect that it is a weed, but it's so pretty that I'm inclined to let it grow. I wondered if any visitors here know what it is.

Barb: It looks a good bit like chickweed...except for the flowers. Chickweed flowers have more petals.
ReplyDeleteChickweed is generally considered a weed, but it is actually an herb and has medicinal qualities.
Are you sure the leaves and flowers are of the same plant? The leaves certainly do look like Chickweed, but they should have 5 petals (according to Peterson Field Guide to Wildflowers). The flowers almost look like Pennsylvania Bittercress, but those leaves are very narrow and the plants are more upright.
ReplyDeletePerhaps you have some previously unknown variety of Chickweed in your garden- you could name it after your family!
