Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Weekly Feast Day Activities

One thing I would like to start doing this year (see, I did have a resolution) is to regularly plan some feast day activities. I frequently post feast day recipes at my food blog, but in an effort to do more than celebrate with food, and to prompt me to hunt down and find some educational resources, I'm going to start posting them here, on a weekly basis. I don't always find any great material online, and that is my goal here, but if I do, I'll post the links.

This week we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, and St. John Neumann, as well as the Epiphany on Sunday.

January 3 -- The Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus
For some coloring pages of Jesus go here. And if you have any of the St. Joseph Coloring Books at home, you have pictures of Jesus to color.
This resource has word search puzzles and crossword puzzles for many of the Sunday Gospels.
Talk to your children about bowing their head at the name of Jesus and in our family, anyone who hears the name of Jesus taken in vain, says "Blessed be His Holy Name."

January 4 -- St. Elizabeth Ann Seton
Her museum website has some good discussion questions, and art and drama activities here (primary grades) and here (intermediate grades).
For a child appropriate biography, go here.
For a coloring page, go here and look under her feast day (Jan. 4)
For information on her shrine in Emmitsburg, Maryland, go here.
There is a educational packet available for order from the shrine, to prepare students for visiting, but you can download a copy for free. This packet is designed to help prepare a child for visiting the shrine, but there are some activities for general educational purposes.

January 5 -- St. John Neumann
For a child appropriate biography, go here.
For information on his shrine and the Redemptorists, go here.

January 6 -- The Epiphany
For the meaning of the Feast Day, go here.
For a coloring page, go here and click on the feast day.
For some activities for The Epiphany, including information about the House Blessing and a King Cake, go here.
For a variety of activities, including songs, and art, go here.
And for a page of down loadable activities, go here.
For a Children's Twelfth Day Party go here.
For a home blessing, go here.
I have a recipe for a King Cake that I'm sharing on my food blog, as well.

If you have something you'd like to add to my list, please email me or leave a comment.

  1. Barbara,
This is awesome. One of my goals for this New Year is to try and find more ways to incorporate the liturgical year in our everyday life. The feast days are a great place to begin. I will be checking back often! Thanks.
    God Bless,
    Jane

  2. Thanks for this. I am not a homeschooler, but my children will love doing some of these activities before they go back to school.

    Happy New Year!
