Danette at A Crocus in the Valley tagged me for a book meme. This one looked pretty interesting, so I decided to invest some time thinking about it. Of course, I have a terrible memory, so I don't remember many of the books I have read. Sometimes I pick a book up from the library and start reading it, only to realize in Chapter Five that I have already read it. I know, it's terrible. Hopefully my poor memory will not get worse as I age.
1. One book that changed my life: I don't know that any book has actually changed my life, but I have to agree with Danette and say that Catholic Home Schooling by Mary Kay Clark started a major life ball rolling. Actually, the homeschooling ball had already started rolling when I read this book, because I had already enrolled my children in Seton when I read it. But, after I read it, I was honestly hooked.
2. One book that you have read more than once: As a rule, I don't do this. There are just too many books to read one twice. However, I know that I have read Little House in the Big Woods more than once. I'm certain I read several in the Nancy Drew series more than once, too. And I can't tell you how many times I've read Brown Bear, Brown Bear. Of course, that wasn't for me. ;o) I'm sure there are more, but I can't remember.
I think I'm going to have issues with this "one" thing (One book...).
3. One book that you want on a deserted island: Well, first, the Bible, because if you were deserted on an island you would just need a Bible. But I would also want Divine Mercy in My Soul, the Diary of Saint Faustina. And just for fun, the Little House series, to take me back to my happy childhood.
4. One book that made me laugh: Angela's Ashes. I know that this is not a book most people find funny, but Frank McCourt really makes me laugh, and honestly I don't laugh at books. Usually. I think this book qualifies for the "more than once" category, too.
5. One book that made me cry: A Child Called It by Dave Pelzer. The first in a series of three about a child horribly abused by his mother. I know that children are abused by their parents every day, but to read it through the eyes of the child is absolutely heart wrenching.
6. One book I wish had been written: How to Have Children and Not Lose Your Patience (Or Your Mind)
7. One book I wish had not been written: sorry folks, but I have to say it, Harry Potter. I wish that millions of children around the world had gotten hooked on something else.
8. One book I am currently reading: Matt Talbot by Eddie Doherty. The story of Matt Talbot, Irishman, reformed drunk, and maybe saint-to-be. He had incredible strength over his alcoholism after he learned to rely on God to give him strength. He had amazing devotion to the Blessed Mother, and made extreme sacrifices to make himself worthy of God's love.
9. One book I have been meaning to read: The Catechism of the Catholic Church. Of course I've read many parts, but some day, when I don't have so much darned ironing, I will read the entire thing. I would like to read the entire Bible as well.
I'd love to tag everyone for this. I'd love to know the books you love and read again and again, and the ones that make you laugh, as well as the ones that make you cry. There's nothing better than reading a book a friend enjoyed, and then enjoying it as well. So, if you play, let me know so I can link to you.
Great Job Barbara!
ReplyDeleteI've also read A Child Called It, it was heartbreaking. Little House series is the best! And I agree about Harry Potter. I'll have to check out the others, they sound worth reading. :)
Happy Feast of the Baptism of Christ (tomorrow)!
Angela's Ashes is a grand book. It does indeed have it's humerus moments. I'm sorry I didn't think Nancy Drew AND the Hardy Boys, for after I had read them myself, I also read them to the kids. Now I give the books to the grandchildren. Thank you! Cathy
ReplyDelete"Child Called It" was one of the books that prompted my husband and me to register as foster parents. I remember kind-hearted souls taking my younger sister and me in when my other sister was going into NYC for chemo ... Kids separated from their families need a KIND, safe place to stay.
ReplyDeleteJust finished "Come Be My Light," and have decided Blessed Mother Teresa is the perfect patroness for foster and adoptive parents. I just finished blogging about it ... stop on by and check it out if you have time!
Blessings--
Heidi Saxton
Barbara, parts of Angela's Ashes made me laugh until I cried.
ReplyDeleteI read a Child Called It and it just made me cry. It also gave me a much stronger conviction about adopting.
