Speaking of movies (yesterday I was), we watched two movies -- new to us -- this week.
The first was one Doug and I watched and thoroughly enjoyed -- Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Neither of us had ever seen it entirely. The day after we watched it, Peach found the DVD case and asked to watch it -- what little girl could resist that pretty pink dress?. She ended up watching it four time in two days (just a little obsessive). If you have a little girl who likes song and dance, this is a great movie. It's a little corny, in a 1950-ish way, but has so many great lines. I imagine that it was fairly racy back in the day -- especially the pool scene and courtroom scene. Even today I found it to be very sexy, but in a completely-clothed way. Marilyn Monroe is fabulous in this movie, but Peach and I actually liked Jane Russell better. She's a real hoot!
The second movie we saw last week -- Friday movie night -- was Lady in the Waters. This was a strange movie, as M. Night Shyamalan's are, but, in all, it had some value. We watched it as a family (Doug and I and just two of the boys, ages 15 and 10), as I remember that it was advertised as a family movie. Michael got a little nervous at some of the parts, but none were outright scary (not like Signs or The Village). I wouldn't call it a family movie, though, and if I had watched it first, without the boys, I probably wouldn't have let them watch it. While many parts of the movie were downright silly (much too unbelievable), there was an subtly veiled sexual thread that I didn't like. You're never sure if the main character is attracted to the girl, or is a protector figure. There are a few scenes where it is implied that Story (the lady in the water) is nude, and while no nudity is shown, the fact that she is nude bothered me. The main character, however, is great. He played the agent in Cinderella Man, and really holds the movie together. He has a few great scenes where he reveals a part of his past about which no other character knows. Shyamalan also plays a fairly big role, although his character seriously lacks life.
All in all, the movie was interesting. Some of the imagery was too far out for me, but I liked the storytelling and that the adult characters were able to be convinced of this fairy tale.
