Last night I spent about an hour on the computer queuing up a list of movies to watch this summer. I am lucky to have a fabulous public library and all but about two of the movies I searched for (out of about 30) were available at my library. My resource for all of these titles is the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) website. This is a great resource for movie reviews. They have movies that are New on DVD, Family Video Reviews, Archived Movie Reviews, and my favorite of all-- Top Ten Movie List for every year from 1965 to 2006. They also have reviews for movies coming to theaters, movies on television, and a Vatican Top 45 List.
Now, that said, this is not a list of movies that have been "approved" by the Catholic Church. These are reviews. Each review states the movie rating (G, PG, PG-13, R), as well as a USCCB Office for Film & Broadcasting classification. Each review also gives a detailed list of what might be objectionable -- that is something I really appreciate. It's nice to be able to just look through the list and pick the movies with content I like. Another thing I really like about this list is that there is a wide variety of movies -- not just the ones you see at Blockbuster. Many of these movies I have never heard of, and wouldn't ever know about, without the list. Luckily, my library knows about them, and while I usually don't see them on the shelf, I can reserve them.
So get over there and queue up a long list at your favorite rental (or borrowing) place for the summer.
