Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

I'll take that snow day and raise you some confetti

I realize that statement makes no sense. I'm feeling the loss of my weekend and it has made me a little loopy.

This weekend was the start of the room makeover -- Faith's room makeover. Maybe you remember we bought her a large tree with owls decal for Christmas. It was part of her master plan: "I want my room to be purple -- two walls morning purple, and two walls night time purple, with purple owls and a big tree."

Lest you think I indulge my daughter's every whim, I don't. But six years ago we painted her room "Fairest of them All" pink, and she no longer wanted to be the princess pink girl, so I consented, as long as it was a gift (no freebie makeovers). So, for Christmas she received the decal tree and owls (large tree, life-size owls -- creepy if you ask me. Do you want owls watching you sleep?) and the promise of paint. She talked her dad into starting this weekend.

The dad man does paint prep. He paints trim. He cleans up. He does not paint walls. By default, I paint walls, which I didn't really mind in my youth. But, I'm getting a little old for climbing ladders and I'd really rather pay someone to do it, but that was not in the budget (it's never in the budget).

I started Saturday with the night time purple on the two walls which can not be seen from the hall -- good strategic plan because this purple, called "romantic moment" by Behr, is what I called "oh-my-gosh-this-sure-as-sh*t-is-purple." There is nothing in nature quite so purple as this purple. Here's an ipad pic:

I don't normally work on Sunday, but I knew I wouldn't be able to paint all week, so I planned to paint after Mass yesterday. Our pastor used to say the only work on Sunday should be something you can not do any other day, so I thought I was safe, but I may have made God mad (just kidding). The second color is called "confetti." It's a shade lighter than the above, but still most definitely purple. It's more like sunset purple, or I guess in Faith's eyes, sunrise purple. I had just started on the one long blank wall with "confetti" and had painted about 4 feet of wall, top to bottom. I was on the top of the ladder cutting in at the ceiling when I had a serious mechanical malfunction -- my paint pan came off the holder and hit the ground, paint -- "confetti" -- flying up everywhere. I had a drop cloth, but it was only about a foot out from the wall and not quite long enough to cover the square footage of the enormous splash. There was confetti everywhere! I definitely yelled a bad word (I would have loved to have been at the little neighbor girl's dinner table last night when she told the story of what happened because she and Faith were playing in the room next door). Doug and Faith both came running, and the dad man was not very happy (well, neither was I) and I think he swore her room would be purple until the day she leaves home, or longer.

If you ever need to get wet latex paint out of carpet, you need a wet vac, fortunately something we have, and a lot of hot water. I haven't seen the carpet in true daylight, nor sunlight, because it was snowing all day yesterday, but it looked pretty good in lamplight. Doug would have liked to rip the carpet up and replace it with hardwood floor, something he wants to do in the upstairs, but that's not in the budget right now.

I eventually finished the walls, just before dinner, and I can honestly say that I do not like purple paint. I do not like it on the wall, I do not like it when it falls. I do not like it here or there, I do not like it any where.

But we're stuck with it for forever. Or until we can afford a painter.

The decal goes up in two weeks, the curtains (reusing the green gingham curtains from the pink and green room) hopefully back up today. She gets the bedding for her birthday in February, so I'll be sure to show you final pics when it's all done. I only wish I had taken before and after pictures of confetti all over the carpet. I think whoever named purple paint "confetti" put a curse on it!

For now I'm taking my snow day on the sofa. You'll find me there with a heating pad and a cup of tea. Don't wake me if I'm sleeping.

  1. The big question is: Does FAITH like the colors?

One of my best friends just did the exact same thing with her daughter's room, 2 shades of purple, not the spill. ;-) I did that. When we painted Meg's room aqua last year she spilled a cupful of paint on the carpet. And we don't have a wetvac. Lots of rubbing alcohol and paper towels works, too, but I guess a wetvac would be better. I'm all for replacing the carpet with wood, too, but it's never in the budget. :-/

As for the green gingham curtains going back up....I'm going to trust you on that. ;-) I wouldn't want to ADD more color to that room!

I just remembered that my mom had the most beautiful mauve room when I was in high school. It might have been a tad darker than the Romantic Moment, but not much different. She painted all the furniture white and had a white iron bed and a white comforter with mauve flowers. I loved it. Thanks for reminding me!

Rest! Magnesium for sore muscles? Have a great day!

    1. The tree has a few shades of green, so I'm not adding any colors, really. The quilt is purple, green and yellow, and I bought a few yellow owls. So really three colors -- purple, green and yellow -- and brown in the tree, but dark brown. White furniture.

This was way more than a cup of paint. It was almost 1/4 gallon. Ugh.

      Your mom's room sounds gorgeous!

  2. Oh my goodness! At least your cleanup was pretty purple and not what Peter "accident"ally left on the floor this morning. Only he didn't leave it, he tried to help and pick it up. And dropped it. Twice. And then tried to wipe it up. I bet paint smells better too! Though I probably would have let a bad word slip too, just watching that paint fall.

Enjoy your rest on the couch!

    1. Jenny, you're right -- I'd rather clean up paint than you-know-what, but in all honesty the only part I played in the clean-up was the guilt. ;-) And the paint only smelled marginally better. I had to paint with the window partly open to avoid a headache, and, like I said, it was snowing!

  3. Oh, Barbara - what a day! My niece did her bedroom in purple and green as well when she was about 14 - still likes it and she is a college freshman now. No owls, however :)
Have a biscotti (or two) with that tea if you still have some - you've earned them ;)

    1. I'm so glad to hear that, Mary, because my husband really meant it's staying that way (though if we ever sell, I think we will have to paint!).

PS I had two biscotti after my healthy breakfast. ;-)

  4. So glad it came out of the carpet! My daughter likes purple, too. But, thank goodness she's never mentioned changing her walls...they are two toned pink with brown ribbon curling around between the two colors. I don't ever want to change it!

    1. Oh, pink and brown is one of my favorite color combos, right up there with light blue and brown. And a brown curling ribbon? Oh I think you just gave me an idea! Thanks, Suzie!

  5. Barbara...you make me smile! We are in the middle of a room makeover at our house for my daughter Kylie. However, I had the bright idea that I would let Sarah make it her Interior Decoration internship for homeschool because she wanted to learn about Home Dec. BIG MISTAKE! I now have many, many nail holes in the walls and a room that is a total disaster...hoping this will come together soon :)

    1. Janelle, you should have Faith and Sarah consult together, except, now you've seen Faith's interior decorating taste (ahem)! She is constantly redecorating -- which makes me more than a little crazy. She'd move her furniture every week if I let her!

Sounds like the paint spill was a nightmare. Feeling your pain!

  7. Maybe, Just maybe?? The purple won't look so purple once the curtains are up--said hopefully.

  9. My eight year old granddaughter would be in heaven there... she is madly in love with all things purple, and has been since she could say the names of colors. But if she wanted to paint her room purple, I'm sure her little sister (with whom she shares it) would protest with cries for pink!

  11. Lol, now I understand why you're sick of purple! Painting is a pain, isn't it? It's fun when you're 17, but that's about it. I painted my bedroom this past fall. It was orange and I hated the color on the walls. Painted it "starless night", a dark navy. Love it! But all the prep & painting made me so much happier with the rest of the house. I think I'm content for another couple of decades. :)

  12. What did you do to make the color look so purple? I tried to use Romantic Moment color sample on my bedroom wall and it looked more plum like how it looks in the container. I currently have white walls and trying to paint for the first time and don't know what I'm doing. I'd like a true purple color like how yours came out, should I repaint my walls a different shade first like white? Not sure what to do..I got the Behr Romantic Moment in semi gloss, looked different then yours.

    1. Lisa Marie,
I think that once all the walls are purple you will get the true color. If your other walls are white or light, the purple is reflecting the light color. And I used satin finish, so yours is glossier ( reflecting more light). BTW -- I think it is plummy, more red cast than blue.
