Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

May Day

Madonna and Child
by Marianne Preindelsberger Stokes (1907)

The Madonna and Child was one of many works Stokes produced based on spiritual themes. It is a depiction of the Christian story of the birth of Jesus, told through the Gospels.
Painted in Ragusa on the Dalmatian coast, overlooking the Adriatic Sea, the model for the Virgin Mary was a local village girl.
The costume is representative of a traditional Dalmatian costume from the time, and provides a bright focus for Stokes to express her style as a colourist.
When the portrait was painted the place was under the semi-control of the Austro-Hungarian Empire but is now part of former Yugoslavia and Croatia.

In the background Stokes surrounds the Holymother and child with thorny stems seeming to refer to the future crucifixion of Christ.

Stokes' interest in biblical themes is typical of the artists of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, whom she admired. The Pre-Raphaelite were a group of artists working in the second half of the nineteenth century. Their aim was to return to the purer styles of the early Renaissance artists like Fra Angelico and their subject matter was often spiritual. (text from http://www.wolverhamptonart.org.uk/ )

  1. I am looking forward to your month of Mary posts, Barbara! I think it is so beautiful that you do this! Happy May Day! Happy Feast of St. Joseph the Worker! Happy Month of Mary!

  2. I had a heck of a time getting this posted, Sarah. I am not naming names but someone is working against me here! I have a feeling being strong-willed is going to come handy this month.

  3. seeing if I can leave a comment...

I love when this is done, I think I saved a ton of my images of Mary from a couple years ago....

    Beautiful image you've found!

  4. What a lovely post! Thanks!

  5. I love that picture. I have never seen it before. Asking for special prayers this month. Never can get too close to Mary.

  6. Echoing Bl Mother Teresa of Calcutta who taught this prayer to the little children in India - and bigger ones like me in Minnesota - to be prayed on the five fingers of a hand... "Mary - be a - mother to me - now." Amen - that says it!

I appreciate your comments -- sometimes I feel like I'm talking to myself!
