Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Yarning Along...

...with Ginny at Small Things.

I got the idea for both my book and my knit from fellow knitter and Yarn Along participant, Jenny. I do love that about Yarn Along -- you get a good idea for a project and a book at the same time. I admit there have been a few books I have tried from other Yarn Alongs that have been duds (imho). Oh well -- we all don't have the same taste. But, I am loving this book. Love the story and the characters and even the setting -- all so interesting to me.

The book is My Antonia by Willa Catha and I am knitting a market bag (pattern found here) in Sugar and Cream wooded moss.

I started this bag over a week ago and made a mistake early on in the netting. I remembered reading that the Amish always place an intentional mistake in their quilts "because only God can be perfect" and I decided to swallow my pride and leave the mistake. Unfortunately in knitting, mistakes often compound themselves and after knitting about 7 inches of netting, I admitted I could not live with the mistake (which had become mistakes) and I ripped it out to the base (the solid knitting). I started over and made the same mistake three more times. Ugh. Sometimes I am really thick. I finally realized I was skipping the last YO in my first row of netting and know I'm finally doing it right. Sigh. I do love this pattern, however, and would like to make more of these bags if I can ever finish this one. ;-)

Join Ginny at Small Things for some other great projects and other great books.

  2. Some projects just need to be started a couple of time before they can fly. I have a pair of socks to frog - again - myself.

Stopping in from Yarn Along. My link is http://blog.mymummyknits.com/yarn-along-30/

  4. I'm noting the author and book for my next jaunt to a library. Also, I love that bag! Can't wait to see it finished - and, I love that Amish "rule" (it is beautiful at the heart of it). Hugs and Aloha!

  6. We listened to My Antonia years ago in the car---OMG, 10 years ago??---and I loved it. O Pioneers, too. They would be good for a reread.

  7. I'm going to look up that book at the library. You're right. All the Yarn Along pattern and book recommendations are great! I just started knitting in March and I'm much faster at unknitting than knitting. Sometimes a little mistake is just "wabi sabi" and sometimes it is just a little hard to handle. http://www.karmama.ca/2011/08/yarn-along_17.html

  8. Sorry this has been such a frustrating project for you! I am a new knitter, so used to taking out at least one part of the project and re-doing it. The yarn is beautiful....can't wait to see your finished bag!

  9. my antonia! i have been wanting to read that. it's in our home library somewhere. as is another book by her. (can't remember the title). but i recently admitted to myself that i am just no good at fiction right now. i don't know why i can't seem to "get" into any book i start lately. actually it has been a while. probably since the literary potato society book. yup. it's been a while.
love that market bag. i hate to see all those stitches go to a bag that is going to get dirty!!! but you did say you like to knit useful things. and you can't get much more useful than a market bag. i wish i remembered to leave mine in the car! so many times i get to the store only to find the bags are at home and then we end up with a million plastic ones. and i feel like a scum bag for destroying the planet...one plastic bag at a time.

(i really am getting off the computer now....i am leaving unusually long comments everywhere.)please don't "ban" me from your blog barb....

    xo.

  10. I have that pattern in my queue, too! I look forward to seeing how yours turns out. I am starting to think of Christmas gifts ... My goal is knit something (small) for my husband, mom and 6 children! I have my work cut out for me, but I'm going to "go for it!"

P.S. I guess if I didn't get to Joseph, it would be OK. He wouldn't know. But that's kind of sad to even consider. He is crawling around now! Can you believe it?!

    P.P.S. Are you on Ravelry?

  11. Jennie, I can see why My Antonia would be one of your faves, you farm girl, you!

Nin-Carol, if I would read patterns more closely, I would be fine! ;-)

Amy-Caroline, I have a lot of fabric bags that I use at the grocery store. I picture this as being a more "specialty store" bag because it's not very big. It might be ok at a farmer's market but even then only if you don't buy much. I'm thinking drug store!

  12. Sarah, I think you would enjoy My Antonia. Very down to earth but good characters!

Cheryl, I loved The Help. Really enjoyed it. Wish I could take you to see the film. :-)

Sara, is O Pioneers Willa Catha, too?

  13. Amanda, I had to look up wabi-sabi. ;-) no. this mistake was not wabi-sabi as I don't think most knitting mistakes are because you build on them.

Kristen, this yarn is really a pleasure to knit with. And it's cheap!

Regan, I would never ban you. You're one of my favorite commenters. ;-) see my comment to Amy-Caroline above about bag usage.
