Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Yarning Along on Candlemas...

.

 ...with Ginny.

We had a wild and crazy night last night, beginning with a ferocious ice storm, which turned to rain, which turned to wind, which turned to snow early this morning. The power went off and back on at least a dozen times, but when we woke this morning it was on, and the schools had called a calamity day (snow day). The sidewalks are a sheet of ice (or at least they were at 5 a.m.) but by now most of the ice has blown off the trees, along with many, many branches. There are about 50,000 without power in our county, so I am feeling very fortunate this morning. It is the Feast of Candlemas today, or the Presentation of Jesus, (also known as the Feast of the Purification of Mary), however, so I decided to light all of the candles anyway.

I finished the scarf for my niece on Monday and blocked it yesterday. I am astonished at how beautiful it is after blocking. What was a ball of fuzzy, sticky yarn is now smooth and even and soft. I take back what I said about the yarn -- Knit Picks Shadow Tonal Lace Yarn in Blue Yonder -- and the pattern has become quite familiar -- so much so that I think I should make another right away! ;-) Off this scarf goes in the mail and hopefully it will reach my niece by the weekend.

I spread it out here so you can see the pattern.

My read is Everything is Grace by Joseph Schmidt, FSC which I just started but am anxious to really get into.

  1. Gosh, I heard your whole state was in a state of emergency.

Glad you are safe and have power.

I guess this storm missed MN by 100 miles to the south (Iowa)

We DO have the cold from it though, 11below zero and 25-35 mile wind chills below zero.

    A stay inside day.

  2. lovely scarf, and wow what a storm, we've had some pretty intense winter weather here as well. I'm enjoying it while the power is on, but I'll be ready for spring soon!

  6. The scarf is just gorgeous, Barbara! I have yet to learn how to block. Are there any secrets?

Glad to hear you are safe and warm. This storm is MAJOR! Can't believe we missed it. Although it is FRIGID outside today, but still the schools are open and we are going about our day ...

Love the idea of lighting a bunch of candles today. A simple way to honor this beautiful feast.

  7. Jamie, We had almost every possible weather in 24 hours (no tornadoes or hurricanes) -- it's crazy.

    Thanks, Kathryn. Stay warm!

Thanks, Sara. I am so amazed -- I really thought this scarf was going to look like junk!

I wish you could send me some warm sunshine, too, Regan. It's been so long since we saw sun!

    Plain and Joyful, Thanks!

Sarah, There really are no secrets. I gently washed the scarf with a tiny bit of liquid detergent in cold water by hand. I used a clean towel to squeeze (not wring) all the water I could squeeze out. Then I spread dry towels on the floor (or my bed) and spread the scarf out just the way I wanted it to look. I used straight pins to secure it in place and when it was dry it stayed just the way I wanted it to. Amazing! There are many ways to block -- this is just one. You can google it to see more.

  12. Beautiful scarf. I love the color. I have a vest that is screaming to be blocked but my son won't stop wearing it.

We woke up to 12" of snow! Be safe.

  15. Beautiful! I had the very same feelings about the yarn and pattern of my first lace scarf. By the time I was done and it was blocked I loved it.
