Lately my children have been answering my directions with heavy sighs, or in the case of the direction to "get out of bed," with absolutely no response at all. This is especially true of those who are of the age with a teen on the end. I have taken to asking if they'd like direction with a lecture on the side or just straight up.
They take it straight up every time.
So far it's working.

I'm glad it's working! I hope that I remember all these nuggets of wisdom that I read on your blog and other blogs when my kids become teens =) Although the sighs have already started with one of my kids. Oh no!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you found something that works. :)
ReplyDeleteOne of our teens recently missed a trip to the movies because of tardiness (after six attempts to get moving). The left behind teen has not kept anyone waiting since. :)
i have really wondered what to do about the sighing thing.
ReplyDeletei thought tongue removal was the best option.
but maybe you are on to something!
and it sounds less painful???
i was just thinking along the lines of...if your tongue causes you to sin...
Straight up! That is brilliant! With teenagers, the less said, the better. Certainly with teenage boys. I often think that it is my own tongue that I need to cut out. Maybe it doesn't cause me to sin so much, but it surely enables me to talk too much. I think that humor works the best, if you can come up with something that they think is funny. My other technique is to kick them in the pants -- a surprise attack works best.
ReplyDeleteTeenagers! Give me a two year old with a snotty nose and a dirty diaper any day.

The one I'm having trouble with right now is Little Brother, whose new favorite phrase is "Who cares?" I CARE, and if he says that to me one more time he will find out that I care enough to send him right to bed.
