Xbox Live is one of those "of this world" things I prefer to pretend doesn't exist. If you're not familiar with Xbox Live, it's a cable connection that allows you to play Xbox with people who are not in the same room with you. Not even in the same house.
But having it involves making crtain my children are not playing Xbox with creeps, and so there are parental controls and parental passwords to deal with and, generally, too much policing for my taste. So, we do without and my children have to cry themselves to sleep each night because they are deprived.
My husband, however, made a deal with high school boy regarding his grades and high school boy lived up to his end of the deal. Which means we just got Xbox Live for the rest of the summer. And I'm playing bad cop.
I've been griping and muttering under my breath about one more thing to worry about and generally not being very happy with it, until last night. I could hear the boys one floor and a long hallway away making a lot of noise and it was 10 p.m. and their sister was asleep. I went upstairs to hush them and when I walked into the room I could see both younger boys were on Xbox Live. Immediately I was on alert and I suspiciously asked "who are you playing with?"
"Sean," they both answered.
"Sean?" I asked. "Your cousin Sean?"
"Yup," they said. "We're having a great time."
Sean lives in Maryland and we are in Ohio.
All I could say was, "Awwww, tell Sean I said 'Hi and he needs to go to bed soon.' "
Maybe it's not so bad after all.

The internet, games and facebook can be wonderful communication tools. It has made our move much easier to handle. Our older girls are still in touch with their friends and have reconnected with their uncles (a huge blessing).
ReplyDeleteThat made me smile.
ReplyDeleteSee, they're good kids, playing with their cousin, who I'm sure is also a good kid. How fun that they can play together, hundreds of miles apart!
i hate to admit it that i was glad when the boys' xbox got stolen. it was in november, the thing was just under a year old. we haven't had the funds to get a new one and i really go back and forth about it. when it is here it seems like every free second they are on the darn thing. i was most disturbed when littlest boy new how to load his own profile. at 3 years old. and in his spare time all he talked about were the halo weapons.
ReplyDeletebut it was nice when my boys played with cousins too.
the creeps i can do without!
