Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
Phil 4:6-7

Satan at work

.

Yesterday evening we had a discussion, Doug and I and our high schooler, about what's going on at Notre Dame. We had briefly spoken about it a few days ago at the dinner table, but last we talked in a little more depth about what exactly we feel is going on. Neither Doug nor I are alumni of Notre Dame, nor do we have a child admitted, however, that does not exempt us from feeling outrage at the entire exhibition.

I think that all Catholics have a right to feel outrage at the overt disobedience that Fr. Jenkins has displayed for the country to witness. While he is certainly not alone, and there are even many religious who back him up on this issue, most Catholics agree that Fr. Jenkins is waaaay out of line. Most Catholics recognize that a vehemently pro-choice politician has no place at the podium of a Catholic institution, much less the commencement exercises of Our Lady's university.

And at the root of this issue is disobedience. While some people have turned the truths around to try and make them something they are not, (Fr. Reese), that is just more intellectual dishonesty -- the kind used by pro-choice people everywhere. To deny the truths about the president is to be disobedient -- not to a religious order or a bishop or even the entire conference of Catholic bishops, but to be disobedient to God.

Though many religious in this country have stretched their freedoms by their liberal homilies and doling out advice that borders on untruths, some, like Fr. Jenkins, have taken their freedoms and gone overboard. He boldly refuses to obey his superiors. It appears as thought Fr. Jenkins answers to many entities -- his order, the Indiana Province of the Congregation of the Holy Cross, the board of trustees at Notre Dame, the bishop in the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, and even the USCCB. In truth, however, all of those superiors represent God to Fr. Jenkins. But, he has chosen to disobey each and every one, and ultimately, God.

Last evening we all agreed who is at the root of this issue, and that is Satan. If Satan were to be successful at driving a wedge between Catholics in this country, would he not be best served by choosing a Catholic priest to do his work? Do you not think Satan is sitting back and laughing at what he has accomplished here? Catholic priest against Catholic priest, brother alumnus against brother alumnus, sister student against sister student, brothers and sisters in Christ in direct opposition to each other. He couldn't have planned it better.

From today's Divine Intimacy on obedience, which Fr. Jenkins would do well to follow:

This is certain: God directs us by means of our superiors and thy are not independent of Him. He uses them as instruments which He employees at His pleasure. Hence we must have recourse to our superior with confidence, since through him we contact God, and we are obeying God when we obey him. Such obedience is entirely supernatural and places us in direct contact with the divine will.

"He who follows his own ideas in opposition to the direction of his superiors needs no devil to tempt him, for he is a devil to himself.”
-Saint John Climacus

  1. I've not up to speed with ND, but this is sure disheartening to hear.
In attending a few different parishes during our travels I'm starting to feel a difference. We have two very local churches to choose from, and both are strangely different in the way they lean politically, and it's been the first time I've really noticed there seems to be quite the divide going on in the American Church right now, right before my eyes.

  2. i wish these schools would dump the Catholic tag already. . . they no longer are!
i have friends who went there. i think they graduated in the late 80s and one told me as they were walking, in cap and gown as a class to the graduation site, the girl next to her pointed at a picture of Mary and said "now, who is that again?" this gal was (obviously) not Catholic but had gone to a Catholic University for at least 4 yrs but didnt know who Mary was.

  3. AK,
There most certainly is a divide -- a huge schism in the works. Will Satan get his way?

Regina (have I ever told you that I love that name?),
I think that issue -- the lack of devout Catholic students, is one of the major problems with Catholics schools today, from kindergarten to post doc, which allows this kind of thing to happen. There is no devotion to the Church from the student body, or if there is, there is a huge divide between those who have it and those who don't. I have seen this personally with children as young as five. The difference divides, plain and simple.

  4. Delurking to say that since most Catholics no longer believe in the True Presence ( 70% ), and only 26% of Catholics believe in Satan, disobedience to God by being led by Satan is probably not something that Father Jenkins is concerned about. He and other Religious like him have long ceased to be any example to the faithful Catholic laity, who know a scoundrel when they see one. He is a terrible example for Catholics who see a man who, like you said, is being disobedient to God, but seems to be more interested in intellectual dishonesty instead of his role as a priest.

Back to lurking, but do subscribe to your blog and value the insight you bring to my blog reading. Thank you.

  5. I agree with you that Satan is gleefully enjoying his handiwork. Even so, we cannot despair. Our Blessed Lord is still fighting for His Bride, the Church. He inspires so many of the faithful to speak up and be counted. I applaud Bishop D'Arcy's gentle but firm reproof. Also, many of the students are extremely upset as well. http://www.ndresponse.com/press.html

I don't think anyone else noticed this, but I saw on the University's website that Father Jenkins is also allowing the "Vagina Monologues" to be performed on campus. http://newsinfo.nd.edu/news/8174-monologues-inspire-dialogue Perhaps I do not have the right to say this since I am not an alumnus nor do I have anything to do with the University, but in my humble opinion, the Reverend Father should be replaced. He has confused intellectual freedom with immoral thinking. He is not a suitable leader for Catholic youth.

Thank you, Barbara, for your wonderful insights day after day. I am so grateful to read about your thoughts and experiences. May Our Lord bless you and yours always.

  7. Great post Barbara! Wonderfully insightful comments, Ladies.

If only there was a way to homeschool college...At least by the time mine are old enough to attend they will know their Catholic faith.

  8. I'm a bit disturbed at the number of seniors that will be attending this graduation that actually want Obama to attend. 97% think it's ok for him to be there! I'm disturbed by all of this.
