Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

A Hunting We Will Go...

.
Today I am hunting for books. Yes, more books. My Peach is ready to do some early reading, and I'm hunting for just the right books to use this summer. She thoroughly enjoys Dick and Jan (ugh), but I cannot do any more Dick and Jane. She also thoroughly enjoys the early Faith and Family readers. So, you get her style. The trouble is, I'm having a hard time coming up with easy readers that are similar, but not identical.

Dr. Seuss is out -- she has no patience for that silliness. And they must be fairly easy readers -- she's just a beginner.

Any suggestions here, friends? I'm hoping to "stock up" before the summer gets here.

  1. Some easy readers my kids liked include the Biscuit series by Alyssa Satin Capucilli. Also the various easy readers by Cynthia Rylant are pretty good: Henry and Mudge, Poppleton.

I'm sorry I can't remember more. I found that my kids went through the easy reader stage fairly quickly.

  2. Christine,
Thanks. We do have a few of the Biscuit books. I'll pull those out and check out the rest. That's a good reminder that they stay in the early reader period for a short time!

  3. I would second Christine's recommendation for the Henry and Mudge series. Some other favorites around here are the Clifford books and the Young Cam Jansen series.

How fun! My favorite thing to do in the summer is find a sunny spot and a good book-Enjoy, Peach!

    God Bless,
    Jane

  4. My daughter has loved the CHC Little Readers. They come in a pack and you fold them and kind of make your own books, they progress a little with each. Another that she might like, although, might find too silly, is Amelia Bedilia books, I love those!

  5. We are huge fans of Henry & Mudge, Poppleton, and Mr. Putter & Tabby. Your little pumpkin may well glean a touch of silliness by the time she's finished! (Or, in my kids' case, a touch too much.)

How about Cricket magazine and all its derivatives? Our library carries all the back issues.

Finally, I see that you've linked to ABC Starfall. My early readers would spend hours at the site if I'd just let them, and it's teaching them a ton about letter sounds, etc.

Meanwhile, I sit back and eat my bon bons.

  6. Berenstain Bears were a big hit with Middle Sister (though I couldn't stand them). We also like Little Critter (Mercer Mayer) around here.

There are some easy-reader Arthur books out as well.

  7. Thanks, friends. I found quite a few of these suggestions on my library's online catalog. I think reserving them is a wiser choice than buying them, which is what I was going to do. Now we can "taste and see" which ones we like without committing, and hopefully she'll move on quickly.

If anyone else has suggestions, I'd love to have a lineup for the entire summer.

Margaret -- I reserved Ladybug and Click magazines because I am thinking Cricket is beyond her reader level. Does Felicity read Cricket?

  8. Pulled these from my shelves:

Go, Dog. Go! and Big Dog...Little Dog both by PD Eastman.

Fisher Price makes some super easy readers such as A Day With May, Let's Jump In!, Oops! I Made a Mistake

Great Day for Up by Dr. Seuss

Old Hat, New Hat and The Spooky Old Tree (my personal favorite easy reader book) by Stan and Jan Berenstain
