Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

A Fun Sister Movie

Last night, after Peach went to bed, with a few unscheduled hours ahead (which almost never happens), Doug and I sat down in front of our new big TV (thanks G & G). I turned to the Turner Classic Movie On Demand channel and Doug scrolled through our options. He selected "The Trouble With Angels" without really even asking my opinion (in fact, as he was selecting I was saying "we don't even know who's in it.") Since neither of us had seen it, he didn't know what he was doing, or maybe he was just hoping I'd just get bored and fall asleep and he could surf sports channels. But, it turned out to be a really cute movie. Gosh, I just don't know why there aren't movies like this today. Am I the only one who likes innocent Catholic silliness?

Since this movie stars Haley Mills (in her teenage years) and another silly teenage girlfriend, I'd say it's a cross between the original "Parent Trap" and "The Bells of St. Mary" without the happy priest. And besides a few not-quite-nice comments from the obligatory cross Sister, there was nothing anti-Catholic at all. In fact, the movie ends with several very touching scenes.

I think I'll watch it again today with Peach. She'll love this one!

  1. Wow, you've never seen that one?? It was shown at least once at my Catholic girls' high school (not a boarding school, though, which was the only difference! LOL!) I rented it recently just for fun, and it is pretty fun!

  2. I love this movie. It shows the nuns in such a good light, and for those of us who remember fondly the nuns of our girlhood, it is very bittersweet. Anyway, every character from Marvel Ann to Reverend Mother reminds me of someone. Your husband made a great choice.

My younger children go to a tiny Charismatic Catholic school -- very old fashioned. The band there sounds just like the band in the movie. I think of it everytime they play.

How lucky we were to go to the Convent schools. Please dear Lord, bring them back!

  3. My daughters and I loooove this movie too! There's a sequel to it as well.

Have you ever seen The Fighting Sullivans? or the old version of Yours, Mine and Ours? what about "I Confess"? Those are all great old Catholic movies. Some other favorites are The Scarlet and the Black (my girls love Gregory Peck in that one, so do I).
