Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

"Roman Catholic" politicians

I cannot think of anything that ruffles my feathers more than being in the same boat with politicians like Nancy Pelosi, John Kerry and now, Rudy Giuliani. That's the Catholic boat I'm speaking of.

These three, and other politicians like them, are self-proclaimed Catholics, who by all appearances attend Mass and receive Holy Communion. Yet they vote (or in the case of Giuliani says he will vote) against the teachings of the Catholic church at every important turn. All three of these Catholics are pro-abortion, pro same-sex union and pro-embryonic stem cell research. Giuliani and Kerry both say they are not exactly in favor of abortion (as in wouldn't have one if they could) but would never think to tell another human being not to do it. I'm not sure Pelosi even holds herself back that far. Argh!

I want to ask them if they think it's alright for a mother to kill her three-year-old. Then why is it o.k. to kill a baby at any time? If you would stop a mother from killing a one-week-old, a six-month-old, a five-year-old, wouldn't you stop a mother from killing a fetus? If you say you think it's wrong for you, why wouldn't you stop someone else from doing it? As Catholics we are obliged to do so.

It is a mystery to me why anyone would want to be a Roman Catholic if they disagree, and it appears as though they do so to their very fiber, with the teachings of the Church. I don't know much about Baptists, but I know if you like alcohol and smoking you shouldn't become one. I fervently wish they would do us a favor and just leave the Church.

I applaud priests like Fr. John Malloy of San Francisco who wrote this open letter to Nancy Pelosi in his church bulletin. Hurray! Our US bishops need to be more proactive about politicians like these three if they expect all other American Catholics to be true to the Church. They weaken our Church in the eyes of Catholics and non-Catholics alike.
